Carolina Marin on 31 August 2014 became the first Spaniard to win World Badminton Championship. The World Badminton Championship was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Carolina won women’s singles titles by defeating world number one Li Xuerui of china. China’s Chen Long won the men’s singles titles of the World Badminton Championships.
This victory had earned Spain first major title in the sport. Carolina ninth seed recovered from dropping the opening game to the top seed and Olympic champion to complete an incredible 17-21, 21-17, 21-18 victory.
Earlier, China extended their dominance in women's doubles as Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei claimed won the country's 12th straight gold medal in the event.
